McClellan Park
Back in 1916, McClellan Park, between Osprey and Orange Avenues in Sarasota, was considered a suburb just south of downtown. Two sisters designed the neighborhood with curving streets and sidewalks , running water and septic tanks, all of which were modern innovations at the time. A yacht basin and swimming area were added. They named the subdivision in honor of their father, a well-known physician in New York State, who had a great interest in health. The ladies touted the area’s healthy environment in advertisements to draw in buyers.
After ten years the sisters sold out and traveled but later returned to open a tea room on the property. Today, the area is still one of the most historic and charming neighborhoods in Sarasota. You’ll find many different styles of architecture here including bungalows, Mediterranean, old Florida and modern homes. A good portion of the homes have been updated or remodeled but still retain the interesting ambiance that characterizes McClellan Park.
For those who love the excitement of city life or need to be close to the hospital or downtown, this is one of the most charming areas.
